Farm Culture

As a Garden State girl, I love the renewed emphasis on eating locally grown food for economic, health, and environmental reasons.

And I also love introducing my son to how the food he eats makes its way to his plate every day (several times a day).

Since he was a toddler, we’ve made periodic pilgrimages to a local, pick-your-own farm. Usually, we stick to easy crops like strawberries, beans, peaches, pumpkins, and apples. One October, we visited a turkey farm, but we avoided the uncomfortable topic of what would happen come Thanksgiving. Blame it on his squeamish mother.

Recently, my son and I traveled to upstate New York to visit a friend of mine and her family. She took us along to visit another friend’s farm and the experience was fantastic.
